The Bathing House
Built in the 1770s on a bend in the River Dart, on the famous Sharpham Estate (award-winning wines and cheeses, tours and cafe), The Bathing House originally provided an easy base for modest river swimming. Constructed as a small octagonal tower with three windows facing the river, the building was extended during the first part of the 19th century and then used as a family home for estate workers. Having been tastefully renovated using wood, whites and river blues, now it’s a wonderfully tranquil holiday cottage (there’s no TV reception) that sleeps three. With a patio running the whole frontage, overlooking the water, it’s the perfect spot for holiday sundowners. More South Devon Holiday cottages

Devon holiday cottages quirky Tiverton Castle 1 Devon holiday cottages quirky Tiverton Castle 1Tiverton Castle
Dating from 1106, Tiverton Castle was originally built on the orders of King Henry I. As is the fascinating nature of castles, it has seen additions and alterations down the centuries, with evidence of architecture from medieval to modern. Though the main castle remains pretty much as it always has (it’s open to the public), the 20th century saw sections of it made into six four star holiday cottages (sleeping 2-6), with many interesting original features. Stay in one and you also get free tours of the castle, seasonal fruit and vegetables from the kitchen garden, and free fishing on the River Exe. Find out more
